Our verdict on Timanfaya tickets
Prepare for the day
Timanfaya entrance tickets
Timanfaya is the volcanic heart of Lanzarote, a national park of about 51 square kilometers (20 square miles) of black, rust and ochre lava in the south west of the island.[12] It became a National Park by a decree of August 9, 1974, published in the Official State Gazette on September 17, 1974.[13] Up close the landscape is stranger than photos suggest: fields of ash that crunch underfoot, ridges of coral-like rock, and long slopes of sand in colours you would not expect from a volcano.
There are two straightforward ways to see it. You can buy an entrance ticket for the Montañas del Fuego, the fire mountains at the centre of the park, and build your own day around it. Or you can join a guided tour with transport, a live guide and the other headline sights, so that Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua all fit into one outing. What matters before you go is knowing what you can and cannot buy on the day, what entry costs, and which option suits the way you like to travel.
How to book tickets for Timanfaya National Park
For independent entry to the Montañas del Fuego, tickets are sold online only and each one is tied to a specific time slot.[1] They are not available at the ticket office, which catches people out when they drive up expecting to pay at the barrier. Buying Timanfaya National Park official website tickets is a short job, but it has to be done before you travel, not when you arrive.[1] Choose your date, choose your slot, pay, then plan the drive, the visitor centre and the rest of the day around the time you have been given.
So can you just turn up to Timanfaya National Park? For an independent visit to the fire mountains, you need a slot bought in advance, because those tickets are online only and slot specific.[1] A guided tour works differently: the operator deals with entry, and the tour booked from this site includes skip the ticket line.[3] If your dates are fixed and you would rather not build the day yourself, that is the simpler route. You are collected near your accommodation, the guide explains what you are looking at, and the stops are timed so that the park, the caves and the coast fit into one day.

What a Timanfaya ticket costs
The standard adult entrance ticket for Montañas del Fuego (Timanfaya) costs 30.00 EUR.[2] That is the entry ticket for the park itself, bought for the slot you have chosen, and it is separate from any tour price. Tour prices for the guided days are from prices, so treat the figure as a starting point and check the listing for the date you want, the group size and what the day includes.
Inside the park a few extras can shape the day. The visitor centre at Mancha Blanca gives free access to its exhibition and audiovisual programme, and it opens Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 16:00, which makes it a useful first stop.[4][5] The camel ride at the park lasts approximately 20 minutes.[14] At El Diablo, the restaurant's volcanic oven uses natural heat from the subsoil, where temperatures exceed 600 °C just 15 meters below the surface, and meat and vegetables are cooked without fire or electricity on a grill placed over an open cavity in the rock.[15]
Guided days that include the park
The tour booked from this site is the Lanzarote: Timanfaya Park, Jameos Agua, & Cueva Verdes Tour, from US$102.[3] It runs 9 hours, includes skip the ticket line and a live guide in English, French, German and Spanish, offers free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, and shows pickup details when you check availability.[3] It is rated 4.47 from 2,662 reviews.[3] The route stops at Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, with 61 pickup location options and 61 drop-off locations.[3]
Other listings suit different plans. A southern tour from Arrecife for cruise passengers runs 2.5 - 5 hours from US$57, with a live guide in English, German and Spanish, calling at Timanfaya National Park, the Green Lagoon, the Casa Museo y Monumento al Campesino and La Geria.[7] A Volcanos of Timanfaya and Caves Tour with Lunch runs 9 hours from US$109 and lists skip the ticket line.[8] A 6 hour Timanfaya National Park tour is from US$68, with pickup included and a live guide in English and Spanish.[16]

What you see once you are inside
The Montañas del Fuego is where the ground is still warm. At Islote de Hilario the surface reaches around 250 ºC, and temperatures can even reach more than 600 ºC at 13 m deep.[10] The Route of the Volcanoes has adapted coaches.[9] Guides demonstrate the heat with dry brush and a bucket of water, and the bus loop takes in craters, lava rivers frozen mid-flow and the pale fringe of ash that marks the edge of the protected area.
The park has also stood in for other planets. Several films inspired by other planets have been filmed in Timanfaya, including Enemy Mine, Krull, Mission Stardust, Stranded and Operation Ganymed.[17] Further north, the day changes character completely. Jameos del Agua is built into a lava tunnel around a clear pool, Cueva de los Verdes is a long tube of golden rock with a concert space inside, and both feel cool and dim after the open lava fields.
Getting to Timanfaya
From Puerto del Carmen, the park is about 22 km away directly, with a road distance of about 23.5 km.[6] If you are relying on public transport, Line 60 passes through Yaiza on its route between Arrecife and Playa Blanca, which gets you into the south west of the island.[11] From there the park road climbs steadily through the malpais, past dry stone walls and the first fields of vines sunk into black ash.
Guided days remove that planning. The tour booked from this site lists 61 pickup location options and 61 drop-off locations, and the exact pickup details appear when you check availability.[3] You do not have to work out the drive, find parking or hold a time slot in your head; you meet the coach, and the day runs in order through the park and the caves. For families and for anyone visiting without a car, that removes the trickiest part of the day.
When to go and what to pack
The visitor centre at Mancha Blanca is open Monday to Sunday from 9:00 to 16:00.[5] If you want a proper understanding of what you are about to see, the exhibition is the place to get it, and it is the free part of the day.[4] Walking inside the park is limited by the terrain, but the Termesana Route allows visitors to come into close contact with the volcano and the culture of Lanzarote's inhabitants during the 1730-1736 eruptive period.[18]
Pack for wind as well as sun. The lava holds and reflects heat, shade is scarce, and the trade winds can be strong, so water, a hat that ties on and a light layer work better than a heavy jacket. Closed shoes help on the ash and gravel, and a thin scarf or buff is useful on dusty stretches. A slot booked earlier in the day leaves room for the caves, the coast or the visitor centre afterwards, and the camel station is an easy add-on at approximately 20 minutes for the ride.[14]
